Just some places and people in and around Ontario. Past and Present.

I thought I'd include a few places that I find rather interesting. Places with that special "Ontario Flavor." Places like small restaurants, truck stops, people I find interesting and generally "small town Ontario" places. I hope you might find some of these places of interest anyway.

Mary Pickford Was Here Years Ago!!

This first article came to my attention lately and I just couldn't resist including it in here for your perusal. Actually I live not two miles from the place this article refers to so I was naturally interested when I received it today, 18th April, 2001. It actually appeared in the Dufferin County Museum Newsletter in 1997 but it only came to my attention today. I scanned it and hopefully made it large enough so you could read it without too much trouble. Realizing that ISP Server space is precious, I did my best to reduce the file size small enough not to be too much of a liability to them but large enough for you to read.

We have many very famous people living in the country around here. Many are movie stars, television personalities, writers and many are well known politicians. There are many high profile people like world famous "Name Brand" product company owners, well known lawyers and doctors and television personalities that own estates here. Mulmur Lake has always been owned by wealthy people but I believe is now owned by a large Corporation as a sort of "retreat." As it is no secret since the opening of Rama Casino four years ago, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell used to live just north of us ... that is until Goldie "let the cat out of the bag" herself at the opening of Casino Rama and was immediately driven crazy with "Americain" tourists so much she and Kurt sold their place to Arnold Scwarzenegger and bought somewhere near Caledon. They now keep their location a "top secret!"

DeerThe picture below is part of a herd of domesticated deer which were being raised not too far from where I live. I just couldn't resist stopping the car and taking a picture of them. I also took a short "eight second" shot in the "movie mode" of my Nikon 990 Digital Camera but after loading it on the Server, found that it took too much download time plus too much space on the Server so I deleted it. The people that were raising them had a herd of about forty animals but I only got a look at these few while they were feeding at the fence. Sad to say but shortly after this picture was taken he had to have the whole herd destroyed because they contracted "rabies!"

CreekLoose Strife Spreading The idyllic looking scenes below may look to be quite pretty ... and it is. However, several years ago someone brought this plant from Europe as a "pretty flower" and started growing them around their house. Over the years ... after they even sold it in flower shops for flower gardens, they found out too late that it is really a very dangerous weed and a complete threat to the eco system of the planet! Apparently it only survives on wetlands and has the ability to dry them out completely if it is let go unchecked! Too late ... as is so typical of our glorious "smotherment" in Ottawa ... it had spread all through the "golden triangle from east of Toronto right down to the Lake Erie shores and north to around the Huntsville area! A few years ago the scientists that work on these sort of things imported some sort of beetle that is apparently its one enemy and they "salted" the wetlands here and there from near Hamilton to Niagara Falls area. Well, so far I have not heard the results of their experiment but I can attest with the pictures here that "PURPLE LOOSE STRIFE" is certainly alive and well and flourishing in the area where I live. Within a few years ... at the rate it is spreading, there will be no wetlands and you do not have to be a "rocket scientist" to figure what devastating results that will have on our eco system! I don't suppose it will do any good to sort of give our "smotherment" in Ottawa a "nudge" over it 'cause it sure as hell doesn't do any good talking to them about excessive gasoline prices, health care heading downhill, excessive taxation on everything, misuse of the hated GST funds, etc...... hell I could go on forever but what the hell good does it do??

Charelaise CattleI tossed this picture of a small herd of Charelaise cattle grazing alongside the road near Shelburne, Ontario. I understand they originate from France and are an excellent "all-round" beast for both milk and meat. I do notice that the picture is kind of dark but I'm just too lazy today (90 degrees in the shade!) to fix it up right this moment. I just wanted to pop it in to let you see what kind of country we live in here in good old Ontario, Canada. The picture on the right was taken from my car as I was driving home from my morning coffee clutch. Too lazy to even get out of the car as I shot it from the side of the highway. Just another typical "farm scene" of this beautiful country.
